IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1 | FORMAL LETTERS

IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1 - FORMAL LETTERS

Some of the essential tips that should be understood while writing a formal letter are

1. Write at least 150 words.

2. Formal letters are generally written to people whom we do not know (unknown people). Hence,  the communication has to go on in a formal tone.

3. Addressing the other person is very important. Since the letter is written to unknown people, start the letter by writing 'Dear sir or madam, '

4. A proper structure has to be followed while writing the formal letter. Include the introduction where the purpose of writing the letter should be stated, followed by three body paragraphs which will be indicated as bullet points in the given question itself. Finally, write the conclusion.

5. After writing the conclusion, the salutation should be 'Yours faithfully' followed by your full name.

6. The paragraphs should be organised very well. This is called Cohesion.

7. A wide range of vocabulary should be used while writing a letter.

8. Remember that different types of sentences have to be used in a formal letter - simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, conditional sentences, passive sentences, etc.

9. The handwriting should be legible.

10. Stick to the point. Do not deviate from the idea that has been given in the question prompt.

11. Practice is very important. For achieving a band score of 8.0 or more,  follow all the tips that we have discussed in the video and you will see an improvement in the way you write a formal letter.

12. You will be given 20 minutes of time to write the letter.
