The IELTS reading test is designed to assess the test taker's reading skills. It consists of 40 questions and takes 60 minutes time to complete the test. This test includes reading for main ideas, understanding a logical argument, reading information and recognizing the writer's opinion, attitude and purpose.
The IELTS academic reading test includes long texts range from descriptive, and factual to the discursive and analytical. The texts are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.

The IELTS general training reading test consists of 3 sections. Section 1 contains two or three factual texts, which are composite. Section 2 contains two short texts focussing on work-related issues.  Section 3 contains long and complex texts based on a general interest. The texts are extracted from books, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, notices, company handbooks and guidelines.

The IELTS academic and general training readings tests are graded at the same level. The level of difficulty in the academic reading test is high. Hence more questions are to be answered in the general training reading test to receive the same score. The IELTS reading test can be taken on paper or a computer. There is no difference in content, scoring, marking and format. For every correct answer, the test taker receives 1 mark. Scores of 40 questions are converted to 9-band scale.

There are several question types in the IELTS reading test. They are 

 Multiple choice,

 Identifying information ( true or false or not given),


 Matching features,


 Identifying writer's opinion or claims ( yer or no or not given ),


 Sentence completion,




IELTS reading tips:

1)To improve band score, the test taker has to develop skills for each question type.

2)Use the skimming and scanning technique to answer questions for long texts. The skimming of the passage is to get a general idea of the content. The scanning technique is to locate information quickly.

3)The test taker has to develop speed in reading the passages and find the answers very quickly.

4)Don't take more time to understand every word or full passage. 

5)Develop vocabulary and grammar.

6)Manage time to answer the questions quickly because there will be no time to check the answers.

7)Follow the instructions very carefully.

8)Practice sample questions and test papers to get a good band score.

9)Learn more question types and develop reading skills. 

10)Improve handwriting and typing speed for pen and paper-based IELTS and computer-delivered IELTS reading test.
